The Executive Committee of ESME have come to realize that
members lack clear information concerning REGISTRATION &
CERTIFICATION of ENGINEERING PROFESSION.
This was a task handled by the Basic Metals and Engineering
Industries (BMEIA) in the past years. Unfortunately, after
the Agency was dissolved and replaced by the Ministry of Trade
& Industry Metal Products Development Center, the task
of registration and certification turned out to be a no body’s
responsibility.
On the other hand, ESME has been working actively in the past
couple of years in JEAPAS, the joint Engineering Professional
Associations Secretariat that include about six professional
Engineering Societies, namely,
Ethiopian Society of Mechanical Engineers (ESME)
Ethiopian Society of Chemical Engineers (ESChE)
Society of Ethiopian Electrical Engineers (SEEE)
Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers (EACE)
Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA)
These associations have been discussing REGISTRATION &
CERTIFICATION OF ENGINEERING PROFESSION under the auspices
of Joint Engineering Professional Association Secretariat
(JEAPAS) for the last two years with the aim of officially
transferring the certification of professional engineers to
their respective discipline and has made a considerable progress.
It began by establishing a Harmonizing Committee that came
up with draft resolution prepared on how to register and certify
professionals.
The draft resolution was approved by JEAPAS and submitted
to the Ministry of Infra Structure through the Minister D’Etat
of the same ministry. We hope it shall be approved soon.
Hence, although it is a point of serious concern for ESME
that at the moment there is no responsible party that registers
and certifies Mechanical engineer, the Society hopes that
the activities that it has started under the auspices of JEAPAS
will bear fruit and the deadlock will be resolved soon.
